Your weekend update...

Still living in my own little bubble a bit, but it's for good reason as my life gets sorted out a bit.

Gave notice at work, so I'll no longer be working in accounts at Geoware by the time Thanksgiving rolls around. They retooled my schedule in a way that wasn't acceptable, and gave half my accounts that I have spent months working with to someone else. So, time to leave, and get myself re-calibrated to focus on school...

Which is good, because I now have to hire the TA's that I will be overseeing, as well as the business manager for the magazine. Oh, and I was 'elected' as the president of the Management Sciences Student Association, starting immediately, so I began getting my new team up and running. It will be a real pleasure working with the MSSA this year I think, I am definitely looking forward to it.

Otherwise, I'm in a perpetual state of "am I getting everything done right?" and I still have a few important hurdles to plan for. (ahem: thesis)

Also, my ultimate frisbee team is doing well - won decisively tonight! - and at the party after I realized that somebody I knew from GRADE SCHOOL is on the team now! Weird stuff...

I love grad school

Day three and I'm keeping my head above water still ... so much has happened in so short a time. One of my favourites was a message I got just now:

"Dear Professor,

I am a student in Systems Design currently considering taking my msci option.

I have a few questions I was hoping you could answer as you were listed as the
co-ordinator of this option.

Firstly, there are the 4 main requisities..."

and the message goes on from there.

Hehehehe, grad school is fun.

Back into the whirlwind

So it went like this ...

Passed through the ExpecTAtions easily, highlight being my giving a brief presentation that one student commented was "just like a lecture" (in a complimentary way, mind you.) Also good meeting my fellow TAs - there will be some fun people in my program this year.

Weekend was spent at a yoga intensive in Kitchener. Iyengar style, which is clearly not my favourite, but the sessions were with one of the world's more reputable teachers.

Got some "great" news on Saturday night that was so "great" that I had new grey hairs by the end of the evening. Let me just say that there is a special place in hell for those who chose to manipulate others that they are (or in this case, were) close to.

Today, though - whew!
- met most of the faculty in my department
- met all the students in my incoming class (Welcome BBQ)
- gave a tour of Uptown Waterloo for a few members of the incoming class
- got told I should run for the Man. Sci. Student Association (hehehe)
- got enrolled into my second Certificate in University Teaching course this semester (got special permission for that one - w00t!)
- found out I likely won't be able to pay my tuition in time, thus may get kicked out of school. Time to fight the good fight (again)
- cancelled my trip to Edmonton
- got told I was ranked highly as a potential TA for the other ManSci class I applied for (I can handle two TAships, methinks, but the department nixed it)
- dropped in on Imprint to say a few hellos
- dropped in on CBET to say a few hellos
- avoided a parking ticket
- am going to head out and be social soon with some new people from my department

... and generally had a good time. Cheaters aside.

Update: tuition payments have been taken care of! That was likely the easiest fight I've ever had to take care of on this campus.

And another thing to add

Last full day of work at Geoware yesterday, from now on I'm part-time!

Today and tomorrow are Teaching Assistant training through the Faculty of Engineering at UW. Most of it is pretty simple, but I have learned a few things:

- UW offers a Certificate in University Teaching (CUT), free courses for grad students! I've just enrolled in two of the classes for this semester...
- I will get paid four times monthly
- we had some fun, interactive presentation practices in our smaller tutorials. Most of the day is spent with about 250 people in one room, but the breakout sessions dropped out numbers down to about a dozen per tutorial. My session was led by my 603 professor, and he seems awesome

Also, Asia's been e-mailing me and it looks like I'll be teaching a few yoga classes this fall...
